ICTJ strongly advocates for a holistic transitional justice vision for Ukraine as part of its programmatic activities. Leading this work is the head of ICTJ’s Ukraine program, Kateryna Busol. She is the author of the new report, “Myths and Ways Forward: Transitional Justice for Ukraine." In this interview, Busol discusses the path toward holistic justice for the country.

Even though young people were driving forces behind the revolutions in Tunisia, Libya, and Lebanon, their lives have not significantly improved since then. Many have been pushed to leave their home countries for socioeconomic or political reasons. A new ICTJ book features the testimonies of 18 young migrants who made this difficult choice.

ICTJ, in collaboration with the Center for Media Integrity of the Americas, the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, and the New York City Bar Association, recently hosted a screening of the Colombian documentary Después del Frío ("After the Cold"). Coproduced by ICTJ and Colombian journalist María Jimena Duzán, with the support of the Embassies of Sweden and Norway in Colombia, the film paints an intimate portrait of a nation seeking healing and transformation, where the scars of the past give way to hope.

Since 2014, conflict in Yemen has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths, displaced millions, destroyed the economy, and exacerbated systemic marginalization, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophes. Yet currently, transitional justice and reconciliation take up little space in the Yemeni political arena. In this context, ICTJ has released a new report that explores pathways to a just and sustainable peace in Yemen.

The field of transitional justice increasingly recognizes the relevance of mental health and psychosocial support in contexts of massive human rights violations. Despite growing advocacy and awareness at the global policy level, however, the field lacks a systematic approach to the issue. Now, a new ICTJ report contributes to such an approach.

In societies grappling with the legacies of mass atrocities, truth-seeking bodies and the reports they produce can be instrumental in exposing culpability, revealing root causes, and preventing a recurrence of violence or repression. A new ICTJ research report serves as a practical guide for those working in truth commissions and fact-finding bodies on how to convert large amounts of data and information into credible reports.

The United States has never collectively confronted its history of colonialism, slavery, and racism in an effort to reform the systems that perpetuate harms to Black communities and other marginalized groups, or to redress these wrongs. Events in recent years, however, have amplified calls for meaningful action to reckon with the past. Given that truth seeking is integral to the investigation of past wrongs, ICTJ and a coalition of practitioners from multiple law firms has released a new report that examines the experiences of official truth commissions from around the world to identify relevant considerations for US stakeholders.

In advance of the 2023 SDG Summit, the Working Group on Transitional Justice and SDG16+ has released a new report underscoring the contribution of transitional justice to the advancement of sustainable peace and development and offering stakeholders strategies to better incorporate it into relevant agendas and action plans. The SDG Summit marks the halfway point of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and offers the global community an opportunity to take stock of the progress it has made and the challenges it still faces in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
